Abstract Scope The discharge of cobalt(Ⅱ)-containing wastewater from the metallurgical industry poses potential risks to both ecological environments and human health. In this study, a novel silica-based adsorbent (SiO2-POOH) was synthesized via chemical modification, and its performance for the removal of Co(Ⅱ) from metallurgical wastewater was systematically investigated. Key parameters influencing the removal process, including solution pH, initial Co(Ⅱ) concentration, and adsorbent dosage, were examined. It was found that pH not only regulates the chemical speciation distribution of Co(Ⅱ) but also significantly affects the adsorption process. Under optimized conditions (pH = 8.0, initial Co(Ⅱ) concentration = 15 mg/L, adsorbent dosage = 1000 mg/L), the Co(Ⅱ) removal efficiency achieved by SiO2-POOH reached 34.89%. The adsorption mechanism was further elucidated through isotherm analysis complemented by Visual MINTEQ software simulations. This study demonstrates the potential application value of SiO2-POOH for treating metallurgical effluents and provides a novel approach for the remediation of cobalt-containing wastewater.
