| Abstract Scope |
For lightweight automotive parts the use of high strength aluminum alloys instead of steel would lead to significant reduction in the car body weight (~over 40%) and consequently a substantial increase in fuel efficiency (~ 30%). Owing to their high specific strength, 6xxx to 7xxx series alloys are potential candidates. Nevertheless, their inferior formability compared to steels poses challenges. Process optimization can be achieved through a better characterization of the anisotropy in plastic properties and use of appropriate material models. In this paper, the results of an experimental study of the plastic anisotropy of AA 6061 and AA 7075 sheets are presented. Uniaxial tensile tests were conducted along seven orientations. Digital image correlation (DIC) technique has been used to determine the Lankford coefficients and thereby formability. We conclude with a discussion of the observed differences in plastic behavior between these materials and suitability of existing anisotropic models in describing them. |
