| Abstract Scope |
Compositionally complex alloy (CCA) systems range from ductile face-centered cubic alloys to high-strength body-centered cubic alloys. CCAs additionally exhibit a diverse range of deformation mechanisms; hence, their bonding behavior during cold spray consolidation can vary significantly. Therefore, understanding how microstructure and properties evolve during the cold spray process, where the feedstock powder particles undergo enormous kinetic energy impact, is of great importance. This work examines how feedstock powder characteristics and composition govern particle deformation and the resulting splat-boundary microstructure and integrity. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy were utilized to investigate microstructural evolution from feedstock powders to as deposited and heat-treated conditions, with particular focus on phase evolution and refinement at the splat boundaries. Furthermore, the mechanical properties of the various deposits were analyzed using in-situ micromechanical testing and conventional microhardness and tensile testing to understand their behavior across different length scales and post-deposition conditions. |
