| Abstract Scope |
Over the past decades, microstructure-sensitive design has become an integral part of modern alloy development, successfully enabling steels to overcome the traditionally observed tradeoff between strength and damping properties. Conventional alloy design treats impurities and microstructural defects as undesirable features and relies on manufacturing strategies to minimize their presence. In contrast, this study explores the potential of intentionally introduced microstructural defects to enhance the damping performance of steels. To this end, microstructural changes induced by a combination of thermo-mechanical processing and the purposeful addition of impurity elements are investigated and correlated with the resulting macroscopic mechanical behavior. Emphasizing practically implementable solutions for industrial applications, the findings demonstrate promising pathways to significantly improve the damping properties of a broad range of steels through deliberate microstructural defect engineering. |
