| Abstract Scope |
In recent years, the increase in productivity and the extension of campaign durations at the Ilo copper smelter have underscored the need for improved control of high-criticality equipment. Among these units, the reactor of the sulfuric acid plants—particularly the first stage of the converter—is of special relevance, as it directly receives the gas stream from the pyrometallurgical processes. This study presents a fluid-dynamic modeling approach aimed at evaluating the two main mechanisms responsible for reactor deterioration, manifested as increased pressure drop: thermal degradation and particle accumulation. The model is validated using experimental plant data, and potential mitigation strategies are proposed to reduce these effects and extend the intervals between screenings. |
