| Abstract Scope |
This study investigates the effects of Bismuth (0-6 wt.%) on the microstructure and mechanical properties of extruded Mg-8Li alloys. Analyses via FE-SEM, EDS, and EBSD reveal that Bi addition induces Mg₃Bi₂ precipitation. This systematically decreases the α-Mg fraction (52.6% to 31.5%) while increasing the deformable β-Li phase (47.4% to 66.0%). Furthermore, Bi addition suppresses dynamic recrystallization (DRX) during extrusion, reducing high-angle grain boundaries. Consequently, while strength slightly decreases (YS: 100.8 to 92.8 MPa; UTS: 136.1 to 122.4 MPa), ductility is remarkably enhanced. Elongation increases dramatically from 37.5% to 64.3% with 6 wt.% Bi. This exceptional improvement in ductility is primarily attributed to the increased proportion of the BCC β-Li phase and altered DRX behavior. Tailoring Bi content effectively manipulates phase distribution, providing a strategic approach for designing ultra-lightweight, highly formable Mg-Li alloys. |
