| Abstract Scope |
This work advances ICME-based design of aluminum extrusion processes by quantifying how billet preheating affects the microstructure and flow behavior of 6110 aluminum. Homogenized billet sections supplied by Hydro are characterized by optical microscopy, SEM, and TEM to establish baseline microstructures for CALPHAD modeling. Candidate preheat cycles, defined using CALPHAD dissolution predictions and industrial expertise, are applied using a Gleeble thermomechanical simulator. Evolution of Al(Mn,Cr,Fe)Si dispersoids, Mg₂Si, and Q-phase size distributions is quantified and compared with model predictions to evaluate microstructure-evolution simulations. In parallel, hot flow stress at 480 °C is measured to support development of a constitutive model for HyperXtrude extrusion simulations. Together, these results provide quantitative links among preheating, precipitate/dispersoid evolution, and flow behavior, enabling further alloy and process design. |
