| Abstract Scope |
Laser Metal Deposition (LMD) is a promising additive manufacturing technique for fabricating complex metallic components. However, optimizing deposition parameters for novel materials remains time-consuming and inefficient. This work introduces a Materials Discovery Platform for LMD that integrates experimental wire-based deposition with advanced material characterization and data-driven analysis. Our initial focus is on twin-wire LMD, with plans to extend to hybrid wire–powder feedstock systems. We examine the effects of key process parameters—wire overlap distance, standoff height, applied voltage, and heating time—on melt pool behavior, geometry, and mechanical properties. Responses include microstructural shape accuracy (via Micro-CT), and mechanical performance (via tensile testing with Shimadzu and Deben systems). This integrated platform enables rapid mapping of processing–structure–property relationships and paves the way for accelerated qualification of new alloys and deposition strategies in metal additive manufacturing. |
