Complex precipitation sequences are observed in many alloys where precipitates evolve through multiple intermediary states. In 6000 series aluminum alloys the main precipitate strengthening phase is the metastable β '' phase which can transition into the subsequent metastable β' phase through several possible pathways. The ability to model such precipitation kinetics as a function of alloy composition and heat treatment schedule is needed to optimize heat treatment, evaluate performance, and aid alloy design. One possible pathway for sequential precipitation is that the preceding precipitate phase provide nucleation sites for the subsequent precipitate. In this scenario, Fletcher’s description of the heterogeneous nucleation energy barrier can be used to determine the nucleation kinetics. This treatment of sequential precipitation kinetics has been implemented within the precipitation module of Thermo-Calc and is applied to predict the β''→β' transition in an Al-Mg-Si alloy. It is shown that the new nucleation description improves the ability to capture complex precipitation sequences in an industrially relevant alloy. |
