| Abstract Scope |
Developing disruptive and forward-looking low-carbon aluminum smelting technologies has become a key pathway and research hotspot for enabling green and low-carbon transformation. In recent years, aluminum chloride electrolysis technology has attracted considerable attention. This paper systematically reviews the research progress of this technology, outlines its fundamental principles, and focuses on analyzing the technological developments in three core process stages: the preparation of anhydrous aluminum chloride, its purification, and the aluminum chloride electrolysis process. The feasibility and pathways for achieving energy savings and carbon reduction through aluminum chloride electrolysis technology are discussed, and the key challenges China’s aluminum chloride electrolysis process facing are also identified . This paper proposes strengthening efforts to tackle the key bottlenecks in aluminum chloride electrolysis technology, with the expectation that this technology will soon be applied in low-carbon primary aluminum production and the preparation of high-quality primary aluminum. |
