Abstract Scope |
Rare earth – Iron compounds with ThMn12 structure are increasingly investigated as permanent magnet materials with low rare earth content. Compositional tuning of rare earth and transition metal content is important to optimize performance, but nitrogenation to form compounds REFe12N is crucial to obtain useful values for Curie temperature and anisotropy. The inherent instability of the nitrided phase is well known, yet only few studies have investigated the detailed nitriding dynamics of the REFe12 phases, or concluded a feasible manufacturing path from nitrided powders to bulk magnets. We have investigated the nitriding dynamics of the CeFe11Ti phase as a surrogate material through thermodynamic and structural characterization. Further, we have tested the feasibility of direct current sintering as a route to consolidate nitrided powder of CeFe11TiN. |
