Mechanical properties of a material are typically predicted using a crystal plasticity (CP) model, given the microstructure. The CP model is solved using the finite element method (FEM). However, the accuracy of the CP model prediction is affected by the microstructure domain discretization in FEM, uncertainty in the model parameters, and model form. In the prediction of Titanium-7 wt% Aluminum (Ti-7Al) mechanical properties using a CP model, existing studies do not quantify discretization and model form errors and rely on deterministic parameter estimation methods. In this work, Richardson extrapolation is used to quantify discretization error. Bayesian calibration is employed to quantify model parameters and model discrepancy, defined as the difference between CP model-predicted and observed mechanical properties. The proposed uncertainty quantification approach helps improve accuracy and reduce variance in CP model-predicted Ti-7Al mechanical properties. Furthermore, calibrated CP model parameters for single-phase Ti-7Al are useful in studying the two-phase Ti-6Al-4V material. |
