| Abstract Scope |
The fabrication of refractory ceramic materials via additive manufacturing remains limited by tradeoffs among speed, resolution, and geometric fidelity. We present direct ink additive lithography (DIAL), a novel ink-based AM method for producing geometrically complex ceramic parts with sub-nozzle resolution on the scale of tens of microns. DIAL uses dense yield-stress fluids as a feedstock, allowing for greater than 70vol% solids loading to be achieved in green parts, leading to minimal shrinkage and warpage in final sintered pieces. DIAL opens a new design space for ceramic parts with multiscale architected structures and complex failure pathways, relevant to structural and extreme-environment applications. This talk presents DIAL's underlying process mechanics, demonstrates its capabilities across a range of part geometries, and discusses resulting microstructure-property relationships in sintered alumina and zirconia components. |
