Vacancies may influence the local lattice state and complicate the interpretation of diffusion-couple experiments. In this study, we investigate non-equilibrium vacancy behavior in Cr–Ni diffusion couples by four-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy (4D-STEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and density functional theory (DFT) simulations. Specifically, high-resolution reciprocal-space measurements are used to quantify spatial variations in lattice parameter across diffusion interfaces and within different compositional and phase regions. By correlating these structural measurements with local composition measured by EDX and the diffusion conditions, this work seeks to assess the distribution and evolution of non-equilibrium vacancies in diffusion couples. The results will provide an experimental framework for quantifying vacancy-related structural changes and improve understanding of the roles of point defects in elemental diffusion and microstructural evolution in alloys under elevated temperatures. |
