Abstract Scope |
Recent advances in sintering-based additive manufacturing have enabled the development of hierarchical microstructures with nanoscale features, including nanolattices, nanoporous materials, and stochastic nanostructures. These microstructures enable a myriad of functional and engineering applications. However, the thermal and microstructural stability of such high surface-to-volume geometries remains poorly understood. Herein, we present modeling work aimed at understanding interfacial dynamics that control microstructure development during nanoscale sintering. Using atomistic simulations, we reveal large variations in sintering rates as a function of grain boundary structure. Mesoscale computational studies demonstrate the role of local particle packing in densification rates and interfacial instabilities of sintered rod geometries. In broad terms, our work establishes process-structure linkages providing future avenues to design sintered materials with tailored microstructures. |
