| Abstract Scope |
Pyroprocessing of spent nuclear fuel is a promising path that can close the nuclear fuel cycle by reprocessing actinides into new fuel and separating the parts that cannot be recycled such as lanthanides. This leads to a buildup of lanthanides in the molten salt over time in the electrorefining step. Understanding the coordination and speciation of dissolved lanthanide ions is necessary to understand and predict the chemical, thermochemical, and thermophysical properties of the salt. This work will discuss the use of Raman spectroscopy to investigate and understand structure and speciation of lanthanides at various concentrations in a LiCl-KCl eutectic salt. This work was supported by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission under award 31310023M0036. |
