Abstract Scope |
Interest in fungi has increased dramatically, specifically focusing on utilizing them for fungi-based materials for various applications, including environmentally-friendly structural and packaging materials. Despite the interest, the material and mechanical properties of fungi sporocarps are still in the preliminary investigation phase. Studying the bulk properties of fungi’s sporocarps is vital to investigating their macrostructural behavior. The bulk properties are investigated by subjecting soft-tissue and hard-tissue fungi sporocarps to mechanical testing and material characterization. Although the microstructure in hard-tissue fungi sporocarps is denser than that of soft-tissue fungi sporocarps, the overall structure-property relationships are consistent, where the microstructural alignment and chemical composition drive the overall mechanical behavior. This characterization will allow for meeting the dramatic increase in interest in using fungi for environmentally-friendly structural and packaging materials industries. |
