| Abstract Scope |
Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries are attracting attention as a next-generation energy storage technology due to their high energy density and the low cost and availability of sulfur. As commercialization approaches, it is important to consider not only performance and cost but also end-of-life management alongside lithium-ion battery (LIB) recycling systems.
While Li–S batteries benefit from reduced reliance on critical metals such as nickel and cobalt, challenges such as high electrolyte demand, excess lithium, and complex manufacturing can offset these advantages and impact recyclability. Recycling Li–S batteries presents additional difficulties due to lithium metal, sulfur species, and non-standard electrolytes, which are not well suited to current LIB recycling flowsheets.
Integration into existing recycling infrastructure will require handling mixed battery chemistries, increasing processing complexity. Ultimately, successful adoption of Li–S batteries will depend on developing compatible, efficient recycling solutions. |
