| Abstract Scope |
To decarbonize and accommodate energy grids globally, there is a multinational resurgence in small modular reactor (SMR) initiatives. Molten fluoride salt-cooled reactors (MSR) comprise a subset of potential reactor types. Intrinsically corrosive, unique monitoring and validation methods are required to identify corrosive species in the salts, as is investigation of Zr metal as a redox buffer, thereby prolonging cladding and containment material lifetime. The effects of a 42% KF-ZrF4 salts on 316L stainless steel and Zr strips were collected in situ using Raman spectroscopy during multi-day high-temperature experiments. Resultant structures in spectral peaks were identified in post-experiment analysis using microscopy (scanning electron, solid Raman), Zr K-Edge XANES, and X-Ray diffraction and X-Ray fluorescence spectroscopy. Additional corrosive species were validated using theoretical Raman spectra. Future research examines vapour pressure of metal additives, and the effects of uranium and other contaminants. |
