Abstract Scope |
Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) used in grid-scale energy storage and battery-powered electric vehicles (EVs) face a significant challenge related to the supply chain of critical materials, such as lithium, cobalt, and nickel, which are essential for these batteries. Moreover, the roll-to-roll process for making commercial LIBs is highly energy-intensive. As an emerging alternative, molten salt batteries have garnered significant attention due to their advantages, including facile electrode fabrication steps, self-healing behavior of liquid electrodes, and the use of earth-abundant elements. In this talk, I will present a novel class of molten salt-based Na-ion and K-ion batteries for grid-scale energy storage and other energy storage applications that can operate at moderate temperatures between 180-280 °C. We investigate the correlation between phase transition and electrochemical performance. Our results will provide novel insights into molten salt batteries, paving the way for new battery technologies for long-duration storage and beyond. |
