Abstract Scope |
To investigate more sustainable and cost-effective ballistic helmet materials, three hybrid epoxy composite configurations combining aramid fabric and curauá fiber—an Amazon-native species—were proposed, along with composites using only one type of reinforcement. All configurations contained at least 60% reinforcement by volume and were manufactured via cold compression molding in a non-alternating laminate form. Dynamic properties were assessed using the Hopkinson bar test. Results showed that hybrid composites maintained comparable maximum stress levels despite a 55% reduction in aramid content, with 37% and 18% reductions in maximum strain and toughness, respectively. Ballistic performance was evaluated through 2D axisymmetric simulations in ANSYS-AUTODYN using a 9mm FMJ Luger projectile on a 100% aramid composite (19T0C). The simulated ballistic limit was 402.5 m/s, closely matching experimental data (≈10% higher). A cross-sectional comparison of simulated and real impacts showed strong agreement, indicating that combining ballistic testing with simulations is a promising approach in early-stage research. |
