Abstract Scope |
Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) enables cost-efficient additive manufacturing with thermoplastics, yet the rheological understanding of filament materials remains limited. This study investigates the correlation between rheological properties and extrusion process forces to enhance material selection and process reliability in FFF. Using both rotational and capillary rheometry, we characterize the shear-thinning behavior and melt volume rate of various commercial filaments. Simultaneously, an experimental test bench measures extrusion forces under controlled conditions. Results reveal a material-dependent, partially linear relationship between process force and melt volume rate. Notably, color additives significantly influence extrusion force, often indicating flow-enhancing effects; however, the magnitude of this effect varies by manufacturer. These findings bridge a gap between conventional rheological metrics and their applicability to FFF, offering empirical insight into the influence of additives and filament composition. The work contributes to a more predictive understanding of processability in FFF and supports material selection for industrial 3D printing applications. |
