| Abstract Scope |
Since the first report of light-controlled plasticity in semiconductors in the mid-twentieth century, studies of illumination-dependent mechanical behavior have mainly focused on changes in hardness or flow stress, while the underlying mechanisms and the broader potential of using light to control plastic deformation remain poorly explored. In this talk, millimeter-sized zinc oxide (ZnO) single crystals with different crystallographic orientations were uniaxially compressed under different illumination conditions, followed by analyses of deformation-induced slip traces and dislocation structures. We show that illumination controls not only the magnitude of plastic flow, but also the operative slip mode in bulk ZnO crystals. This slip-mode modulation arises from the different responses of different types of dislocations to illumination. These findings establish light as a practical external field for controlling the plastic deformation in bulk semiconductors. |
