| Abstract Scope |
Cochlear implants are effective for treating profound hearing loss, but their platinum electrodes are prone to corrosion, reducing speech comprehension and raising safety concerns due to the cytotoxicity of dissolved platinum. To address these issues, electrochemical methods are used to investigate the corrosion behavior of platinum and platinum-iridium alloys, focusing on the impact of microstructural features like impurities, grain orientation, and dislocation density; increased grain boundaries in particular accelerate corrosion. Increased surface roughness and defects are also factors that significantly exacerbate corrosion. To monitor electrode degradation, gold electrodes with thiol coatings are being developed as sensors, detecting platinum degradation products via impedance changes. Analytical techniques such as XPS and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy have shown that gold coatings can effectively identify the degradation of platinum. Future research should further explore the corrosion stability of gold coatings and alternative sensor materials to enhance the reliability and safety of cochlear implants. |
