About this Abstract

Meeting 2026 TMS Annual Meeting & Exhibition
Symposium Stuff Your Students Should Know: Reflections on How We Do—and Don't—Train Our Students
Presentation Title Demystifying Proposals: A Practical Guide for Graduate Students
Author(s) Maria A. Okuniewski
On-Site Speaker (Planned) Maria A. Okuniewski
Abstract Scope Many graduate students are not tasked with having to write proposals during their tenure as students. However, in their next steps of their careers, such as post-doctoral scholars, national laboratory researchers, or industry employees, proposals can be crucial to accessing scientific equipment, pursuing specific research interests, and acquiring funding. This presentation will discuss various benefits and opportunities for materials science and engineering graduate students to engage in the proposal writing process and write their own scientific proposals. Tips and tricks of how to write successful proposals will be discussed. Identification of proposal writing resources will also be discussed.
