Abstract Scope |
Gahnite (ZnAl2O4) is being investigated as an alternative chrome-free magnesium aluminate (MgAl2O4) spinel refractory. Gahnite and spinel samples were synthesized by conventional solid-state methods with spinel used as control samples. A comparative study was conducted to assess the thermophysical and thermochemical properties of these refractories. The thermophysical properties of gahnite and spinel are comparable. Both the materials were also found to form excellent bonding with alumina and spinel refractory aggregates. The gahnite shows relatively better resistance to ferrous slag corrosion. Structural and microstructural evolution in the ZnO-CaO-Al2O3 ternary system was also investigated, for its relevance to castable applications, which have been found to be likewise in the MgO-CaO-Al2O3 ternary system. The feasibility of gahnite as a chrome-free refractory will be discussed based on these findings. |
