| Abstract Scope |
Conventional aluminum and its alloys are widely used in advanced aerospace and automotive applications because of their high strength-to-weight ratio and excellent corrosion resistance; however, they lose strength at elevated temperatures around 300 °C. In recent years, researchers have developed aluminum-cerium alloys that retain strength at higher temperatures because cerium diffuses into aluminum (Al) and forms thermally stable intermetallic phases such as Al11Ce3. In this study, the effect of rolling and annealing on the microstructure and selected mechanical properties of aluminum-cerium (Al-Ce) alloys with 8, 12.5 and 14 weight percentages were investigated. In this study, optical and electron microscopy were used to examine microstructural evolution after rolling. Microscopy results showed significant refinement of Al11Ce3 intermetallics after rolling. Vickers hardness testing showed that the hardness of the produced plates increases with Ce content. Moreover, as expected, rolling alone and rolling-andannealing cycles align grains and intermetallic particles along the rolling direction, improving particle distribution. |
