| Abstract Scope |
Metallothermic reduction coupled with self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) offers a carbon-free and energy-efficient alternative to conventional routes for the production of advanced functional materials. In this study, SHS is investigated as a sustainable approach for the synthesis of rare earth free magnetic (REFM) materials. Unlike conventional processes that rely on fossil fuel derived energy and carbon reductants, SHS utilizes the intrinsic chemical energy released by highly exothermic redox reactions, enabling self-sustaining operation with minimal external energy input and no direct CO2 emissions.
Thermochemical simulations were performed to assess reaction feasibility and support the design of suitable reactant mixtures. SHS trials demonstrated rapid (within seconds) oxide reduction and in situ formation of magnetic intermetallic phases. These phases were characterised in terms of their chemical composition, phase constitution, microstructure and magnetic properties. Overall, we demonstrate that SHS can be used to synthesise REFM materials in a sustainable, scalable and single-step manufacturing route. |
