| Abstract Scope |
The effect of Er addition on the corrosion behaviour of binary Mg- (0.5,1,5,12)wt.% Er alloys were evaluated in three different environments: 0.9 wt.% NaCl, 3.5 wt.% NaCl, and 30% ethylene glycol (EG). Corrosion performance was assessed using PDP and EIS, with immersion tests. The corrosion products and surface morphology were further examined using SEM and Raman spectroscopy to better understand the underlying degradation mechanisms. The results showed that the corrosion behaviour was strongly influenced by both the Er content and the exposure environment. Among the investigated alloys, Mg-5Er exhibited the best corrosion resistance due to the formation of a more stable, protective corrosion layer. In contrast, higher Er additions led to increased localised corrosion, primarily because of the presence of coarse Er-rich intermetallic phases that promoted micro-galvanic corrosion. The dominant corrosion mechanisms changed with the electrolyte composition, emphasising the combined role of alloy chemistry and microstructural heterogeneity in controlling degradation. |
