| Abstract Scope |
Magnesium-aluminum (Mg-Al) alloys are favorable materials for biocompatible and bioresorbable stents. An Mg-6Al alloy stent received an FDA Breakthrough Device status for cardiovascular applications, where fluid flow causes cyclic loading and corrosion. However, in vitro studies of corrosion fatigue are limited, hampering material and implant design. This study utilizes a custom system to simultaneously test samples under corrosion and cyclic loading using 3-point bending in a simulated physiological environment. Two distinct Mg-6Al microstructures were evaluated: fully solution-treated samples that contain no precipitates and peak-aged samples that contain large and elongated β-Mg17Al12 precipitates, known to accelerate corrosion during in-vitro and in-vivo tests. Resistance to cyclic loading in-vitro and in air was evaluated by constructing S-N curves at 5Hz, tracking stiffness drops in time and cycles, and quantifying corrosion rates under cyclic loading and comparing them to no load conditions. |
