| Abstract Scope |
Additive manufacturing offers cost-effective high-throughput production of complex metallic parts when compared with conventional manufacturing. Processes such as LPBF subject the as-built material to air quenching and subsequent re-heating as the next layer is built. This results in metastable microstructures and anisotropic properties across the part, which conventional manufacturing avoids. It is necessary to determine the relationship between microstructure and rapid heating/cooling to determine process controls for post-processing of additively manufactured parts. In this study, X-ray diffraction is collected at rates up to a kHz on four distinct samples of rolled CP-Ti as they are heated at rates from 1.5-1500°K/s. Recovery, recrystallization, and internal strain of the alpha phase are evaluated. It is shown that recovery and recrystallization are functions of heating rate. |
