| Abstract Scope |
Hydrogen production from metallic waste offers a sustainable route for combining Al recycling with clean energy generation. This study investigates the effect of solidification-induced microstructure on hydrogen evolution in an Al–10 wt.% Zn alloy, comparing bulk samples and compacted machining chips. Alloys with dendrite arm spacings (λ) from 17 to 215 μm were produced, machined, cold-compacted, and tested in 5 mol L⁻¹ NaOH at 25 °C and 45 °C. Bulk samples showed higher hydrogen evolution with decreasing λ at 25 °C due to enhanced Zn-rich microgalvanic activity, whereas temperature dominated at 45 °C. In compacted chips, hydrogen generation depended on both microstructural inheritance and compact integrity. Coarser microstructures promoted electrolyte penetration and crack opening, while finer ones formed more stable compacts that limited electrolyte access. These findings highlight the combined roles of alloy microstructure and integrity of briquetted waste chips in alternative recycling-based hydrogen production. |
