Fast Fourier transform (FFT)-based methods have become prevalent in mechanical solvers due to their computational efficiency and efficacy with voxelized input data. However, these solvers can produce “ringing” and “checkerboarding” artifacts, often associated with the Gibbs phenomenon, that appear as non-physical fluctuations in the predicted stress and strain fields. Artifacts are exacerbated by large stiffness contrasts and defects (e.g., pores and cracks) in the material, which can also degrade or even
prevent convergence of the solver. In this study, several FFT-based solution schemes are systematically compared in terms of accuracy and efficiency using reference problems, including materials with a stiff inclusion, an elliptical hole, and pores characteristic of additive manufacturing processes. The solution fields are also benchmarked against analytical solutions where possible. Each solution scheme is implemented within the open-source Materialite code. Based on the results, guidelines are presented for
using and assessing FFT-based mechanical solvers. |
