Abstract Scope |
Icosahedral short-range order (ISRO)-induced nucleation has been invoked to explain the grain refinement and near-twin related grain clusters with 5-fold orientation symmetry around a common <110> direction in Al-20wt%Zn with minute Cr additions. This mechanism, subsequently observed in other transition metals which liquid exhibits ISRO, holds great potential for grain refinement in as-solidified microstructures.
This mechanism is activated via a peritectic transformation involving the Al45Cr7 complex intermetallic. In the literature, ISRO-induced nucleation has been observed under slow solidification speeds as well as in rapidly quenched specimens but absent in additive manufactured alloys. To answer how the cooling rate affect ISRO-induced nucleation, we systematically investigate as-solidified AlZnCr microstructures in wedge-cast specimens solidified under a gradient of cooling rates representative of various synthesis methods. These are coupled with fast calorimetry techniques to study the dependence of the peritectic reaction on the temperature gradient. Results are discussed in light of emerging manufacturing techniques. |
