Carbon in Fe-Cr-Ni austenitic steels causes dynamic strain aging (DSA), manifested as serrated flow, even at relatively low temperatures where lattice diffusion is essentially suppressed. Although DSA is frequently accompanied by negative strain rate sensitivity (SRS), the detailed mechanisms underlying DSA and the resulting negative SRS remain unclear. In this study, SRS was evaluated in carbon-containing Fe-Cr-Ni austenitic steels by stress relaxation and strain rate jump tests, which probe transient deformation over different time scales and thus provide complementary information on static and dynamic carbon-dislocation interactions. The carbon-containing steels exhibited positive SRS in stress relaxation tests but negative SRS in strain rate jump tests even at ambient temperature. These results indicate that dynamic carbon-dislocation interactions are detected by strain rate jump tests but not by stress relaxation tests. |
