Bath and metal infiltration are among the primary causes of early failure in aluminum reduction cells. During the preheating and start-up phases, sealing of the cathodic plane relies on the relative thermal expansion of cell components and, more specifically, on the expansion of the ramming paste as well as its adhesion to the surrounding materials during baking. Understanding how this adhesion evolves throughout these critical phases is therefore essential for evaluating the effectiveness of the cathodic plane sealing. This paper presents a methodology to characterize the evolution of adhesion between ramming paste and cathode blocks during the preheating and start-up phases. The experimental setup, testing approach, and preliminary results obtained with a PAH-free paste are presented and discussed. This work provides the required experimental basis for developing a predictive adhesion model of the ramming paste-cathode block interface, to support further numerical investigation of cell preheating and start-up. |
