| Abstract Scope |
Cold spray enables solid-state deposition of thermally sensitive polymers. However, the literature has not established how impact-induced deformation influences post-deposition crystallization, even though crystallization kinetics govern consolidation, dimensional stability, and bulk performance. This study addresses this gap by employing differential scanning calorimetry to map isothermal crystallization in PEEK and PEEK-BNNP feedstocks and cold sprayed deposits. Pure PEEK were heated to 295 °C, while PEEK-BNNP was heated to 310 °C, rapidly cooled at 50 °C/min to 275-290 °C and 285-300 °C, respectively, and held for 30 min. In pure PEEK, impact-deformed deposits showed a 19% reduction in activation energy, indicating that strain release enhanced chain mobility. This deformation-driven mobility established the baseline mechanism, while BNNP introduced heterogeneous nucleation, lowering the powder-state barrier by 16% and producing a 40% reduction in cold-sprayed PEEK-BNNP relative to pristine PEEK. These findings establish crystallization control as a route for engineering cold-sprayed polymer-composites for demanding environments. |
