Abstract Scope Biodegradable metals have come into vogue and research has burgeoned since 2008. Furthermore, with Bioretec gaining FDA approval in 2023, the field has witnessed added fervent attention. Additive manufacturing (AM) has also seen a meteoric rise since the initial terms of layered manufacturing and rapid prototyping were coined in the early 1990s. Several AM platforms have emerged such as binder-jet printing (BJP) and selective laser melting (SLM) receiving the most attention for AM of metals including biodegradable metals. While the approaches have been largely successful for the most part, there are significant challenges for generation of near net shaped three-dimensional (3D) constructs of reactive bioresorbable metals such as magnesium and myriad iron-based bioresorbable compositions. This invited presentation will outline the progress made in AM of bioresorbable systems while also outlining the challenges and the promise of next generation AM processes for fabricating complex 3D components of reactive and refractory metals.
