Cu-Zn system alloy square bars were subjected to different rolling processes; i) simple unidirectional rolling, rollings accompanied by 90° rotation along rolling direction ii) for once at 25% reduction or iii) for three times at 12.5%, 25% and 37.5% reductions. For all the above processes, rolling was finished at 90% reduction. After 90% reduction, a complicated heterogeneous nano- (HN-) structure, comprising of deformation-induced structures of “eye-shaped” twin domains, ultra-fine lamellae, and shear bands, was developed in all the specimens. Both the strength and volume fraction of the twin domains increased with the number of 90° rotations. Loading-unloading-reloading tests revealed that hetero-deformation-induced (HDI) strengthening significantly contributed to the overall strength of the specimens. Moreover, the magnitude of the HDI strengthening increased with the volume fraction of twin domains. These findings indicate that the harder twin domains play a critical role in enhancing the strength of HN-structured specimens. |
