The control of coarse primary intermetallic compounds (IMCs) promoted by minor alloying additions is a central challenge in wrought aluminum alloy design because they can promote crack initiation. In the Al-Ca-Ti framework, dilute Ca additions interact with Ti to stabilize the CaTi2Al20 IMC. However, experimental data describing the stability of this phase remain limited. In this work, the liquidus temperature associated with primary CaTi2Al20 precipitation was investigated using Liquid-Phase Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LP-LIBS) during 1 °C/min cooling experiments. The solidified alloys were subsequently characterized by scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were also performed to evaluate the formation enthalpy of CaTi2Al20. The combined experimental and computational results were incorporated into a CALPHAD thermodynamic assessment of the Al-rich Al-Ca-Ti system. The resulting description provides insight into the influence of dilute Ca and Ti additions on primary intermetallic precipitation. |
