| Abstract Scope |
Direct visualisation of the intermetallic phases nucleation and growth dynamics are extremally important in understanding the solidification dynamics of metallic alloys.
Here, we used the ESRF extremely brilliant source (diffraction and imaging techniques) to study in real time and in operando conditions the multiphase nucleation and growth dynamics during the solidification of Al alloys under ultrasonic and pulse magnetic field.
A multiphysics model is also developed to calculate the forces and stresses acting on the different intermetallic phases and the solidifying melt. Here, we report a number of typical Al alloy systems, focusing on how the external field control the phase growth instability and fragmentation behaviours, and how such mechanisms can be explored to control the phase sizes and morphology for enhancing the mechanical properties of the alloys. |
