Thermodynamic properties of oxide ions (O2-) in molten salts were investigated using electromotive force (emf) measurements in binary LiCl-Li2O and ternary LiCl-KCl-Li2O electrolytes. These properties are essential for understanding metal oxide reduction (e.g., UO2, NiO, Fe2O3) and oxygen evolution but remain difficult to quantify. An oxide-ion concentration cell employing a Ni/NiO redox couple was developed, based on the half reaction [NiO(s) + 2e = Ni(s) + O2-]. The cell was constructed using a closed-end mullite tube, and emf measurements were performed with a two-phase Li-Bi (65-35 at%) reference electrode at 550-650 °C. Emf data at each temperature were analyzed as a function of Li2O concentrations to determine oxide-ion activity coefficients and electron transfer numbers using the Nernst equation. Thermal analysis was conducted to identify phase transition temperatures of electrolyte compositions and to corroborate transitions observed during emf measurements. |
