| Abstract Scope |
Self-piercing-rivet (SPR) joining technology is important for manufacturing lightweight aluminum structural components. However, ductility and fracture resistance requirements have limited the strength of aluminum materials that can be successfully joined. To address this limitation, a laboratory-scale instrument was constructed to apply SPRs in high-strength aluminum alloy sheet materials, represented by alloys AA6013 and AA7075. The instrument uses a fully computerized servo-hydraulic testing machine with custom fixtures to apply SPRs under controlled forces and displacement rates. This study demonstrates use of the new instrument to investigate novel heat treatments to increase the strength of aluminum materials that can be successfully joined. Results are presented for the application of SPRs to AA6013 and AA7075 sheet materials in standard and novel temper conditions. |
