| Abstract Scope |
Twinning is a key deformation mechanism controlling the plasticity of magnesium (Mg). Although solute effects on twinning are widely studied, most work is at the macroscale, where surrounding microstructural features obscure intrinsic behavior. Here, we quantify solute effects on (de)twinning using micropillar compression in single grains oriented for twinning and at Gd-decorated twin boundaries in Mg–5 wt% Gd. The mechanical response and post-deformation defect structures are compared with solute-free twin boundaries in the alloy and in Mg. Gd addition increases the critical stress for twinning by 29% and for detwinning by 10%. STEM analysis of deformed cross-sections shows this strengthening arises from Gd pinning of twin boundaries. In contrast, Mg shows a 68% reduction in detwinning stress, attributed to nucleation-free detwinning and absence of solute pinning. These results reveal how (de)twinning governs slip activity and clearly link these mechanisms to the observed stress levels. |
