| Abstract Scope |
Nature has long been a source of inspiration for the materials, technologies, and processes we use. Natural structures combine hierarchical or multiscale structures that can create materials with greater mechanical resistance than seems possible based on their constitutive materials. Filamentous fungi offer an excellent source of inspiration for material design both in terms of their porous networking structures and in terms of their chemical and material properties. We explore these areas of bioinspiration (i.e., structure and material properties) and how they can be used in engineering applications for materials. These include an examination of jelly fungi for inspiration in the development of improved hydrogels and an examination of white mushrooms informing the creation of advanced porous ceramics. |
