| Abstract Scope |
Laser beam Welding has been widely considered as a feasible solution of in-space welding, repairing, and onsite maintenance on metallic spacecrafts. Due to the expensive experiments, modeling approach is reasonable for studying the welding process in space with considerations of the special environmental conditions. In this study, we applied an integrated computational materials methodology to study the process-structure-property linkage of laser welding under the reduced gravity condition on the Moon. The research is emphasized on the simulation of molten pool, phase change, grain growth, species composition, dendrite evolution in the welding, and local material properties formed in the welding joint. The methodology is built on a multi-physics modelling framework involving thermal-fluid dynamics, thermal-mechanical model, kinetic monte carlo, phase field, and crystal plasticity finite element method (CPFEM). This modelling work is supported by a collaborative in-space welding project between The University of Texas at Dallas and NASA Marshall Space Flight Center. |
