| Abstract Scope |
Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) uses high power lasers to fuse metal powder layer by layer, allowing complex, customised parts to be produced with minimal material waste. However, preferential vaporisation of volatile elements can change the final composition of printed components, which may affect corrosion resistance, microstructure, functional properties and mechanical properties of final product. This study investigates preferential vaporisation of SS316L during LPBF using in situ laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) together with synchrotron X-ray imaging. In this study, both experimental results and multi-physics model demonstrates that Cr is relatively volatile in SS316L and is more likely to vaporise during LPBF. The extent of vaporisation was found to depend on laser power input. The findings are expected to support future process control strategies and improve the reliability of components made by LPBF. |
