Symposium Biomedical Materials and Devices: From Laboratory to Market
Presentation Title Metal additive manufacturing in load-bearing implants
Author(s) Amit Bandyopadhyay, Susmita Bose
On-Site Speaker (Planned) Amit Bandyopadhyay
Abstract Scope Additive manufacturing (AM) enables the fabrication of complex geometries with unprecedented design flexibility, making it particularly suitable for patient-specific, defect-matched implants. Beyond structural customization, AM provides a powerful platform for developing novel alloy chemistries tailored to application-specific performance. This capability allows simultaneous control of composition and architecture across multiple length scales, enabling implants designed for targeted biological responses. For example, alloying strategies can enhance biocompatibility in load-bearing applications or introduce intrinsic antibacterial properties to mitigate infection risks in vivo. Structural features such as controlled porosity can also be integrated within a single manufacturing step. Our work focuses on Ti-, stainless steel-, and CoCr-based alloys to design and develop infection-resistant compositions for load-bearing implants. We have also designed load-bearing implants for articulating surfaces. This talk will highlight alloy design using powder-based laser-directed energy deposition and laser powder bed fusion, along with resulting mechanical performance, in vitro and in vivo biological responses.
