| Abstract Scope |
Titanium aluminide (TiAl) alloys are attractive lightweight intermetallic alloys for aero-engine applications, but their intrinsic brittleness and high crack susceptibility make reliable laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) difficult. Existing mitigation strategies, including high-temperature preheating, alloying modification and tailored scanning, often compromise dimensional accuracy, compositional stability or microstructural control. Here, we report an electrical-pulse-assisted LPBF strategy for crack-free fabrication of a latest-generation TiAl alloy over a wide processing window. The applied electrical pulses suppress cracking through coupled Joule-heating and electromagnetic effects. Joule heating extends the effective melt-pool lifetime and alleviates cyclic thermal stress, while the associated Lorentz force promotes melt-pool stirring and pore escape, thereby stabilizing solidification. The as-printed alloy develops a fine triple-phase microstructure containing ultrafine lamellar features, leading to enhanced high-temperature strength and fracture elongation. This work demonstrates electrical-pulse-assisted LPBF as a viable route for manufacturing crack-sensitive TiAl alloys and other brittle intermetallics. |
