| Abstract Scope |
Metal matrix composites pair a metallic matrix with a ceramic or other reinforcement to deliver stiffness, wear resistance, and elevated-temperature performance beyond the base alloy. Additive manufacturing requires this as composite powder, which is far harder to produce than single-phase powder. The central difficulty is keeping the reinforcement uniformly distributed: density differences between reinforcement and melt drive settling and segregation, fine particles agglomerate, and reaction with the melt can form unwanted interfacial phases. Because each droplet is small, any non uniformity is inherited by the powder, and hard particles degrade sphericity and flowability. This presentation examines ultrasonic atomization as a route to such powders. Forming droplets by capillary-wave breakup on a vibrating surface avoids the nozzle clogging and erosion caused by suspended particles, while the vibration assists dispersion. Approaches to controlling reinforcement distribution, limiting interfacial reactions, and preserving powder quality are discussed, with a realistic assessment of the method's limits. |
